Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world.

Crescent Moon Rising and Earth's Atmosphere
On Feb. 1, 2014, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Koichi Wakata tweeted this view of a crescent moon rising and the cusp of Earth's atmosphere. Distinct colors are visible because the dominant gases and particles in each layer of the atmosphere act as prisms, filtering out certain colors of light.
Saw this photo and just started laughing. I mean, what, you can't take the bucket off and just go with the plow?
Then it hit to me, Black History Month.
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
For all our presumed intelligence, we are so despicable.
* The remote came with a BeyondTV / Happauge TV Tuner Card package I purchased somewhere around 2006 when I built my first PVR.
On a fluke, two days ago, I installed XBMC on the Dell 6000. It's working just fine.
The reason I bailed, I was having issues getting files to play smoothly. wmv files didn't start. avi files stuttered from frame to frame.
Two things come to mind. One, I had added the XBMC team-xbmc ppa to the repositories. This brought in the current stable release, 'Frodo,' which was version 12. I had been using the available Synaptic package version 11. Two, when I did, it required the removal of two or three media related libraries/files/adapters with them being replaced with two or three others.
Once the problems started and I did the next obvious thing, I removed the ppa and un-installed XBMC and its configuration files. Once that was done, I went back and installed XBMC from Synaptic.
For whatever reason (probably left behind configuration files), even though I had I removed the ppa and XBMC and re-installed, I still had issues.
At that point, I said 'Screw it!' and un-installed XBMC.
What is the difference now? I don't know. Synaptic installed version 12.2. I have no issues with avi or wmv files. The current release is 12.3, but I am not going to add the ppa from team-xbmc to the repositories. If it works, don't fuck with it.
I like having XBMC back. There is still the issue with sound being really low and, on some videos, a noticeable background hum. I put that to the fact of my using a 6/7 year old laptop to watch video on. Hell, it is a Pentium M 1.6 GHz CPU with on board graphics and sound. I should be, and am, happy that the graphics are as good as they are!
If I have learned anything from this, if there is a version available in Synaptic, use that. Adding the ppa to bring in the most current version is not always the best.
